Butte College Now Offering 2 Years Tuition Free

Going to Butte College just became a whole lot easier. The Butte College Promise Scholarship Program, which pays tuition and fees to eligible students for one year is now expanding to two years starting Fall 2019, due to state and private funding.

“For students who have never attended college due to financial reasons, this scholarship gives them an option with a guaranteed free scholarship for up to two years,” said Samia Yaqub, Butte College President. “Starting this August, first-time, full-time eligible students can apply to earn a certificate, degree or transfer without paying any tuition or fees for two years thanks to state and private funding.”

Over 550 students received the Promise Scholarship in Fall 2018, and the college is projecting roughly the same number of new Promise Scholarship recipients this fall.

“This scholarship helps students, at any age, attend college to learn a new career, trade, or transfer. We want students to know they can afford college. Many potential students live in low-income households, and tuition makes college out of reach. With the combined public-private funding from the state and generous donors, our Butte College Promise Scholarship Program is able to expand to two years. Students who received a Promise Scholarship in Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 can extend the Promise Scholarship for another two semesters,” said Tammera Shinar, Butte College Financial Aid Director.

The average cost of a community college education is $11,800 a year with tuition, fees, books, transportation, rent, and other factors.
